Martine Bartlett was born in 1925 at St. Louis, MO.
Though not remembered by name, she will be remembered by her chilling performance as Hattie Dorsett, the twisted, sadistic mother of Sally Field's character in the TV movie Sybil.
Ms. Bartlett was an expert at playing mothers, spinsters and school teachers.
She graduated from John Burroughs School and Washington University, attaining a masters degree of theater at the Graduate Drama School at Yale.
In her early days Ms. Bartlett was involved with the St. Louis Community Playhouse, Rooftop Playhouse and the old Empress Theater.
She debuted on Broadway in 1950, on television in 1956 and in films in 1961 in the film Splendor In The Grass.
Martine Bartlett's film roles were:
Splendor In The Grass (1961) as Miss Metcalf
The Prize (1963) as Saralee Garrett
Lord Love A Duck (1966) as Inez
No Way To Treat A Lady (1968) as Alma Mulloy

Ms. Bartlett was active appearing on television in such programs as The Philco Goodyear Playhouse, The Goodyear Playhouse, Kraft Theater, Robert Montgomery Presents, The United States Steel Hour, Naked City, Ben Jerrod, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, Dr. Kildare, The Breaking Point, Arrest And Trial, The Twilight Zone, The Lieutenant, The Fugitive, The Eleventh Hour, Profiles In Courage, The Big Valley, The Virginian, Mission Impossible, CBS Playhouse, Judd For The Defense, Felony Squad, Then Came Bronson, Mod Squad, Medical Center, The Immortal, The Sixth Sense, Owen Marshall Councilor At Law, Yuma, The Manhunter, Kojak, Cannon, Quincy M E, and Remington Steele.
Ms. Bartlett was a respected stage actress and she did little work in films which is why she is not better known.
Her last known appearance in show business was in 1983 on the TV series Remington Steele.
Martine Bartlett passed away from kidney disease in 2006.
I enjoyed her performances in Splendor In The Grass, No Way To Treat A Lady and Sybil.
