Classic TV                         The Phil Silvers Show ( Sgt. Bilko)  1955-1959

The Phil Silvers Show which was originally entitled You'll Never Get Rich was on prime time TV for four seasons from 1955 until 1959.

The series ran for 142 episodes.

The show was centered around the con man of the Army Fort Baxter Sgt.. Ernest T. Bilko who was always looking for ways to make money around the camp ( especially with gambling) as well as ways to get away from the camp  on furlough.

The camp commander Colonel Hall was always suspect of the actions of the wily and devious sergeant and his crew which in turn kept him on guard and  in a state of constant worry and upset all of the time.

The cast members were:

Phil Silvers as Sgt. Ernest T. Bilko

Harvey Lembeck as Cpl. Rocco Barbella

Allan Melvin as Cpl. Steve Henshaw

Paul Ford as Col. John Hall

Maurice Gosfield as Private Doberman

Herbie Faye as Private Sam Fender

Billy Sands as Private Dino Paparelli

Mickey Freeman as Private Fielding Zimmerman

Joe E. Ross as Camp Cook Sgt. Rupert Ritzig

Jimmy Little as Sgt. Francis Grover

For a point of information, Silvers did not like Maurice Gosfield who played Pvt. Doberman. He found this actor very sloppy overall as well as constantly finding many buttons on his uniform not being buttoned at any said time. He also complained that Gosfield was always running late giving such excuses like that he had tripped over a piece of paper. But even though with this dissention in the ranks, there was just a certain magic between the interaction of the two actors.

The series lasted for four seasons and did well in the ratings . However it featured so many secondary cast members and so many speaking parts that the show became ultimately too expensive to produce. It was this fact, not the ratings, that eventually caused the cancellation of production in 1959.

Needless to say Silvers and the rest of the cast were always in top notch form.

This has become a classic TV series ever since it's beginning.

The series has been in reruns for years and at this time the entire series is available on DVD.

This is a classic comedy TV series and one of earlier television's great ones along with The Honeymooners, I Married Joan and My Little Margie.

A definite for a classic TV comedy.

Leading Ladies                   Kaaren Verne

                                            The Seventh Cross/ Leni
Sherlock Holmes And The Secret Weapon/ Charlotte Eberli

Kaaren Verne was a German born actress who was billed sometimes as Karen Verne.

She was born Ingeborg Greta Katerina Marie-Rose Klinkerfuss in 1918 at Berlin, Germany.

Originally a stage actress and a member of the Berlin State theater , she fled the Nazi's in 1938 and made her English language film debut in 1939 in the British film Ten Days In Paris.. She then emigrated to the United States when British film production stopped during the war.

The studios tried to avoid the fact that she was of a German background by changing her name to Catherine Young. However with America's entry into World War Two and having an actress of German heritage turn her back on Nazism was just to good to avoid using for propaganda purposes.

She was probably best known for her role as Leda Hamilton along side of Humphrey Bogart in the film All Through The Night which exposed the working of Fifth Columnists here in America.

Her film and television career here in the U. S. lasted from 1940 until 1966 with her having made 27 credits in these two mediums.

The film roles of Kaaren Verne were:

Ten Days In Paris (1940) as Diane de Guermantes

Sky Murder (1940) as Pat Evans

The Wild Man Of Borneo (1941) as Actress In Film Scene

Underground (1941) as Sylvia Helmuth

All Through The Night (1941) as Leda Hamilton

King's Row (1942) as Elise Sandor

The Great Impersonation (1942) as Baroness Stephanie Idenbraum

Sherlock Holmes And The Secret Weapon (1942) as Charlotte Eberli

The Seventh Cross (1944) as Leni

The Juggler (1953) as Woman Mistaken For Hans' Wife

A Bullet For Joey (1955) as Viveca Hartman

Outside The Law (1956) as Mrs. Pulinski

Silk Stockings (1957) as Postwoman

Ship Of Fools (1965) as Frau Lutz

Madame X (1966) as Nurse Riborg

She appeared on U S. television in such programs as Fireside Theater, Crusader, Oh Susanna!, General Electric Theater, Bronco, Michael Shayne, The Twilight Zone, The Untouchables, Kraft Suspense Theater and 12 O'clock High.

Not a very big career at all.

She was married three times . Her first two marriages ended in divorce. Her second husband was actor Peter Lorre and that marriage lasted from 1945 until 1950 when they divorced. Her last husband was James Powers and that marriage lasted from 1951 until her death.

Kaaren Verne passed away in 1967 at age 49 from a heart ailment.

I especially enjoyed this actress in the films All Through The Night and King's Row.

Per Quinlan's Film Stars:

Chunky, cheerful looking American actor ( born in Germany) with blue eyes and dark wavy hair., who looked a star prospect after playing the leading role in his first film. But a major studio ( Universal- International) took him up and seriously disrupted his career by changing his name to Bart Roberts before allowing him too late to revert to the real one.  Reason's roles declined by the end of the fifties and starred in two TV series( Man With Out A Gun and The Roaring Twenties) before dropping from sight in the mid 1960's.

Reason was born in Berlin, Germany in 1928 to an American family that returned to Los Angeles shortly thereafter where he was raised.

Rex was the elder brother of actor Rhodes Reason.

He began his stage career in 1948 at the Pasadena Playhouse. He performed there for three years before coming to the notice of Hollywood.

In 1951 he was given a screen test at Columbia Pictures and was cast as the lead in the film Storm Over Tibet.

Reason stayed under contract for two more years at Columbia before switching to Universal in mid 1953 after making a promising appearance in Salome with Rita Hayworth.

He was a tall ( 6' 3") handsome leading man with a distinctive baritone voice.

Reason made two films at Universal under the name of Bart Roberts before he demanded that he use his own name.

The film roles of Rex Reason were:

Scaramouche (1952) as Edmond
