BOTANY BAY                  1953

Botony Bay is a 1953 American film drama based on a novel of the same name by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall.

Directed by John Farrow

Written by Jonathan Lattimer

Music by Franz Waxman

Cinematography by John Seitz

Distributed by Paramount Pictures

The cast included:

Alan Ladd as Hugh Tallant

Patricia Medina as Sally

James Mason as Captain Gilbert

Cedric Hardwick as Governor Arthur Philip

Malcolm Lee Beggs as Nick Sabb

Anita Bollster as Moll Cudlip

Murray Matheson as Reverend Thynne

Jonathan Harris as Tom Oklay

John Hardy as Nat Garth.

In the year of 1857 there were new prisoners being shipped from Newgate Prison in England. Their destination was a new penal colony in Botany Bay, New South Wales.

Hugh Tallant was an American medical student who has wrongly been imprisoned. Along the way he has many clashes with the villainous Captain Gilbert.  Eventually Tallant plans a full out and out mutiny against him.

Another somewhat devious character is Nick Sabb who works with the prisoners but sort of takes out on his own and gets killed for his efforts. Sabb is played by character actor Malcolm Lee Beggs who was first known on TV in the Captain Video series. He was killed in is hotel room in Chicago when he put up a fight against two burglars. Unfortunately due to an early death he did not make many films.

Captain Gilbert is overthrown. Hugh Tallant and Sally are pardoned and they go off together in the sunset which shows a tree with a koala bear on it.

This is a good movie with enough action and adventure to keep you entertained.

The photography was very well done and is quite beautiful.

It is ranked a 6.0 out of 10 by IMDB voters.

Unfortunately it is not yet out on DVD, but you can get excellent copies from various sources on the internet.

A fine adventure film for a DVD collection.

I highly recommend this film.

Oscar Beregi, Jr.

Oscar Beregi, Jr. was born in 1918 in Hungary, the son of another famous actior, Oscar Beregi Senior.

Beregi was a prolific character actor from the 1950's through the 1970's in both film and television.  His strong features and large bulky frame usually cast him as figures of authority or brainy villains.

Thought he had a recurring role on TV's The Untouchables as gang lord Joe Kulak, he is probably best known for his role on an episode of Twilight Zone entitled Deaths Head Revisited as Captain Gunther Lutze who returns to a prison camp and is confronted by the spirits of the prisoners that he brutalized. Rod Serling was so impressed with his performance that he was asked to appear in two other Twilight Zone episodes as well: The Rip Van Winkle Caper and Mute.

Some of the film roles of Oscar Beregi, Jr. were:

The Oregon Trail (1959) as Ralph Clayman

North To Alaska (1960) as Captain

Operation Eichmann (1961) as Chief Of Police, Kuwait

The Fiercest Heart (1961) as Klaas

Oscar Beregi passed away in 1976 of a heart attack

I enjoyed his performances especially as Rev. Leading Ladies                  Janet Margolin

Per Quinlan's Film Stars:

Dark haired, slim, gravelly attractive American actress- too good for Hollywood who couldn't make her a star in spite of some stunning performances , all the way from her debut as a mental patient in David And Lisa (straight from her first Broadway play) to her frighteningly intense murderess in Last Embrace. Decent leading roles proved harder to find in the 1980's.

Janet Margolin was born at New York City in 1943.

She is NOT the sister of actor Stuart Margolin which many times she has been identified as.

Ms. Margolin studied at New York High School Of The Performing Arts. She was discovered for films by director Frank Perry while she was making great strides as an actress on Broadway.

She was immediately brought to Hollywood and cast as the schizophrenic in David And Lisa. Her performance was terrific and the movie was praised by critics for the handling of such a delicate subject.

She continued on as second leads and a few good leads. But unfortunately she did not become a big star.

Some of the film roles of Janet Margolin were:

David And Lisa (1962) as Lisa

The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965) as Mary Of Bethaney

Bus Riley's Back In Town (1965) as Judy

Morituri (1965) as Esther

Nevada Smith (1966) as Neesa

Murder In Peyton Place (1977-TV) as Betty Anderson Roerick

Sharon: Portrait Of A Mistress (1977-TV) as Carol

The Triangle Factory Fire Scandal (1979-TV) as Rose

Last Embrace (1979) as EllieFabian

The Plutonium Incident (1980-TV) as Judith Longden

Tonight's The Night (1987-TV) as Chris

Distant Thunder (1988) as Barbara Lambert

Ghostbusters II (1989) as The Prosecutor

Murder C O D (1990-TV) as Maye Walsh

Ms. Margolin also appeared on television in such programs as The Edge Of Night, Ben Casey, Alcoa Premiere, East Side West Side, The Defenders, Arrest And Trial, Coronet Blue, Medical Center, The Young Lawyers, The Interns, Owen Marshall Councilor At Law, Mod Squad, Lucas Tanner, The Wide World Of Mystery, Police Woman S W A T, Police Story, Joe Forrester, Serpico, Lanigan's Rabbi, Starsky And Hutch, The Eddie Capra Mysteries, Colombo and Murder She Wrote.

She was nominated for a Tony Award as Best Supporting or Featured Actress (Dramatic) for her role in Daughter Of Science in 1982.

Ms. Margolin was married twice.  Her first marriage was to Jerry Brent (1968 - 1971) but ended in divorce.  Her second marriage was to Ted Weiss producing two children and lasting until her death.
