Per Quinlan's Character Stars:
Dark haired, tight lipped, stern looking American actress of upright bearing and reproving gaze. She interrupted her long stage career to run in two dozen film credits between 1934 and 1946 and be absolutely beastly twice to Shirley Temple.
Her original name was Mary Ryan and she was born at Troy, NY in 1884.
Ms. Nash was educated at the Convent Of St. Anne in Montreal and trained for acting at the American Academy Of Dramatic Arts.
Her stage debut was in 1904 in The Girl From Kay's. Prior to films she had a long career as a stage character actress.
Mary Nash is best remembered as Kathryn Hepburn's socialite mother in The Philadelphia Story (1940) and as Shirley Temple's cruel nemesis in Heidi (1937) and The Little Princess (1939)
She was also the unexpected villainess in Charlie Chan In Panama, the nemesis of detective Charlie Chan.
Some of the film roles of Mary Nash were:
The Unbroken Road (1915) as Constance Turner
Arms And The Woman (1916) as Rozika
Uncertain Lady (1934) as Edith Hayes
College Scandal (1935) as Mrs. Fresnel
Come And Get It (1936) as Emma Louise
The King And The Chorus Girl (1937) as Duchess Anna Of Elberfield
Easy Living (1937) as Mrs. Ball
