Attractive, very dark, tart voiced American actress whose career did not race on at quite the pace expected after three big hits in the late 1960's. Tried ( perhaps too hard) to be choosy, but was in routine roles from the early 1970's. Her fifth husband (married since 1984) is actor Sam Elliott. Oscar nominee for The Graduate.
She was born Katherine Juliet Ross at Hollywood, CA in 1940.
Her family settled in Walnut Creek, CA east of San Francisco and she attended and graduated from Lomas High School in 1957.
Ms. Ross was introduced to acting via a performance of The King And I while at Santa Rosa Junior College. She left the school and moved to san Francisco to study acting. She joined The Actors Workshop and stayed with them for three years from 1959 to 1962 where she worked as an understudy and actress. She was cast by John Houseman as Cordelia in King Lear.
While at the Workshop she began acting in television series in Los Angeles. She was then brought to Hollywood by Metro but was dropped and was then picked up by Universal Studios.
She unsuccessfully auditioned for a part in West Side Story.
Her first TV appearance was in the TV series Sam Benedict.in 1962.
Her film debut was in 1965 in the film Shenandoah.

Katherine Ross has been married five times Her current husband is actor Sam Elliott and they have been married since 1984. The couple have one daughter named Cleo Rose.
