Men Of Character Character Actors
Oscar Beregi, Jr.
Oscar Beregi, Jr. was born in 1918 in Hungary, the son of another famous actior, Oscar Beregi Senior.
Beregi was a prolific character actor from the 1950's through the 1970's in both film and television. His strong features and large bulky frame usually cast him as figures of authority or brainy villains.
Thought he had a recurring role on TV's The Untouchables as gang lord Joe Kulak, he is probably best known for his role on an episode of Twilight Zone entitled Deaths Head Revisited as Captain Gunther Lutze who returns to a prison camp and is confronted by the spirits of the prisoners that he brutalized. Rod Serling was so impressed with his performance that he was asked to appear in two other Twilight Zone episodes as well: The Rip Van Winkle Caper and Mute.
Some of the film roles of Oscar Beregi, Jr. were:
The Oregon Trail (1959) as Ralph Clayman
North To Alaska (1960) as Captain
Operation Eichmann (1961) as Chief Of Police, Kuwait
The Fiercest Heart (1961) as Klaas
Judgment At Nuremberg (1961) as Waiter At Court Lounge
Police Nurse (1963) as Dr. Leon Claudel
Decision At Midnight (1963) as Chief Marshal
The Incredible Mr. Limpet (1964) as Nazi Admiral
My Fair Lady (1964) as Greek Ambassador
Youngblood Hawke (1964) as Builder
36 Hours (1964) as Lt. Colonel Ostermann

Morituri (1965) as Admiral
The Scorpio Letters (1976-TV) as Philippe Soriel
Panic In The City (1968) as Dr. Paul Cerbo
The Christine Jorgensen Story (1970) as Dr. Victor Dahlman

Oscar Bereg, Jr. was also active on television appearing in such programs as Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Bat Masterson, Sea Hunt, Boris Karloff's Thriller, 77 Sunset Strip, Twilight Zone, The Virginian, Combat, Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea, Death Valley Days, The Time Tunnel, I Spy, Ironside, The Wild Wild West, The FBI, Mission Impossible as It Takes A Thief among others.
As mentioned previously Mr. Beregi appeared a number of times as Joe Kulak, New York syndicate head over the fours seasons that The Untouchables TV series ran.
Oscar Beregi passed away in 1976 of a heart attack
I enjoyed his performances especially as Rev. Burkhart in the Boris Karloff Thriller episode The Return Of Andrew Bentley, two Twilight Zone episodes ( Death's Head Revisited, The Rip Van Winkel Caper,) and as Joe Kulak in The Untouchables series, as well in the films Ship Of Fools, 36 Hours and Police Nurse.
