Per Quinlan's Character Stars:

Bright, jaunty, fair haired British actor, mostly seen as minor crooks, comedy relief or oppressed little men until the end of the 1950's from which he gradually became the favorite prey of the screen's monsters, particularly those from the Hammer vaults.

Michael Ripper was born at Portsmouth, Hampshire, England in 1913 whose father was a  speech therapist and who encouraged him to participate in diction and public speaking competitions.

Ripper's first taste of the stage was through his father's amateur drama company. He won a scholarship to drama school and then began to appear in theater professionally.

He had a thyroid condition that left him unable to project his voice for the stage. He then moved into quota quickie films and then even participated as an assistant director for a production company.

He appeared in more of the Hammer Studio films than any other actor. Many times he was disguised almost beyond recognition. But his raspy voice remained unmistakable. Some of his Hammer Studio parts were no more than glorified cameos but he always made the most of them.

Mr Ripper was very active on British television.

Mr. Ripper was married three times. He had one child from his first wife Jean Bramley. His final marriage was to Cecelia Dodge from 1995 until his death.

Michael Ripper passed away in 2000 at the age of 87.

I enjoyed Mr Ripper in the films X The Unknown, The Belles Of St. Trinian's, The Mummy, The Brides Of Dracula, Night Creatures. The Revenge Of Frankenstein, Plague Of The Zombies, The Curse Of The Mummy's Tomb, The Reptile, The Mummy's Shroud, The Creeping Flesh, 1984 and The Man Who Could Cheat Death.
