Per Quinlan's Character Stars:

Canadian actor of burly build with chubby face, black ( later gray) hair and equally bushy brows. Mostly in comic supporting parts, such as eccentric , explosive professors, he was also a sturdy and sometimes stern dramatic player when the occasion demanded. Nominated for a best supporting actor Academy Award in The Apartment. Started acting on radio at age 16.

He was born Jack Joseph Krusche in 1922 at Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada .

Kruschen began his radio career while still in high school. During the 1940's he was a staple of West Coast radio drama.

Some of his radio roles were for programs made especially for the Armed Services radio Service.for entertaining those on active duty in the military.

His recurring roles on radio were as Sgt. Muggavan ( Broadway Is My Beat) and Red ( Pete Kelly's Blues).

Other series on radio that he was heard on were Escape, Dragnet, Gunsmoke, Crime Classics, Yours Truly Johnny Dollar, Nightbeat and Suspense.

Mr. Kruschen made his film debut in  1949 in the film Red, Hot And Blue

Mr. Kruschen was nominated for an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor  for his performance in the film The Apartment.

He also appeared on stage as Maurice Pulvermacher in the original 1962 Broadway production of I Can Get It For Your Wholesale with new singer and actress at that time Barbra Streisand.

Kruschen was married three times. His first wife was Marjorie Ultman and the marriage lasted from 1947 until 1961 at which time the couple were divorced. His second wife was Violet Mooring and the marriage lasted from 1962 until 1978 at which time Ms. Mooring passed away.  His final marriage was to Mary Pender and the marriage lasted from 1979 until his death. Kruschen had two children from his first marriage.

Jack Kruschen passed away in 2002 at age 80 from natural causes while on vacation. He had been in ill health for some time.

I always enjoyed this actor especially the films The Last Voyage, The Angry Red Planet, The War Of The Worlds, Badlands Of Montana, The Decks Ran Red, The Buccaneer, The Apartment, Seven Ways From Sundown, Cape Fear and McLintock!.
