Ms Adams was born at Little Rock, AR in 1968, the youngest of three children. Her father was a lumber yard owner.
Ms Adams graduated from North Little Rock High School where after she announced her intention to pursue an acting career after an exchange student year in Australia.
She moved to Hollywood in 1988 where she made her film debut in 1992 in Coneheads.
Her first television appearance was on the TV series Top Of The Heap as Mona Mullins in 1991.
In 1997 she won the Chicago Film Critics Award as "Most Promising Actress" for her role in Chasing Amy.
She made her directorial debut in 2006 for the film Come Early Morning. This film was shot on location at her birthplace Little Rock.
Also in 2006, along with Lian Lunson and Nicole Holofeener, she was awarded the Women In Film Dorothy Arzner Directors Award.
Ms Adams was nominated for The Golden Globe Award for Best Actress- Motion Picture for her role in Chasing Amy.
